The mall was a river of bustling shoppers. Tess tried desperately to keep her frantic aunt within her eyesight as they navigated the living labrinth for the beauty shop.
Pulled out of zoo duties for the day, Tess was on her way to a hair appointment practically against her will. It wasn't that she didn't care for her looks. It was true that her bangs and split ends were becoming more unruly with each passing day. But for every minute she spent being swept through thepassive-aggressive crowds, she wished for an hour of shoveling giraffe manure. At least it was a chore she was well used to, nor were any of those animals so...headache-inducingly NOISY!!!
Suddenly, someone bumped into her, causing her to stumble into a near-empty entrance hall. Panicking after realizing what had happened, Tess stood on her tip-toes, trying to spot her aunt over the heads.
But wait, why was she doing that? Grinning, Tess hesitated not as she took advantage of this opportunity to escape. Auntie would be pissed, but there'd be no way for her to prove that Tess had purposely lost her when, in fact, she hadn't.
She flung open the doors, ignoring the chilly wind stinging her cheeks. She simply shut her eyes and briskly tripped down the sidewalk...
BAM!

"ouf!" said Ray as he hit the ground, careful to keep the person that had bumped into him from doing the same. Unfortunatly, since he was paying attention to keeping the person safe he failed to notice the big stone behind him. his head hit the rock, his vision flash red, the all went dark...
(what happened?) thought Ray as the world slowly came back to him (ooohhhh, my head) (I feel like i just got hit by a truck). He stayed there for a a while trying to ignore the pain. Finally he thought (well, I'd better get going. My sister is waiting for me to make her tree house and i need wood. I just hope i wasn't out too long...) Ray slowly opened his eyes...

"Crap! Sorry! You okay?" Tess chattered as she jumped to her feet. The boy who had caught her, about her age, didn't reply, as he had banged his head against the sidewalk and was apparently unconscious.
Just then, another chilly blast of air picked up, followed by a hollow vrooming sound in the distance that slowly crescendoed. Tess shuddered from cold and recognition: the tornado alarm.
Already, people from the streets began flocking into the mall and other nearby buildings. Thinking she'd better do the same and fast, but not wanting to leave the fainted kid outside, Tess grabbed him by the shoulders and began dragging him toward the door.
* * *
Once inside, Tess slumped him against a wall. How silent the world had suddenly become. None of the thousands of shoppers made a sound as they crouched throughout the hallways. Not even the blasting wind outside made sound, only the wailing siren could be heard, chilling everyone. Tornadoes weren't at all common around here, so the alarm sounded so alien.
But even more strange was when a normal sounding, not-panicking, quite casual voice, asked, "Is this yours?"
"Wha--?" Before Tess stood, without regard to anyone else's cowering, stood a young woman. She wore a heel length trench coat, reflective sunglasses, and a bright red scarf around her hair. One hand was in a pocket, the other was outstretched, offering a...
Tess gasped. She knew what it was. Images flashed through her mind back to the computer incident. The night she lost her report and calculator...for that weird device! It was colored differently and apparently off, but definitely the same kind. Tess was speechless.
"Well, come on, I don't have all day," the lady prompted irritably.
"N...no," Tess replied decidedly. Then, without thinking, added, "mine's at home."
Smiling, the woman replied, "Is it now? Ah, well, then this must be his." She approached the boy who was stirring. "It must be one of yours," she went on. "I saw it fall when you two bumped into each other. Here, kid."

As Ray opened his eyes he listened to the convesation between the two girls infront of him. Well perhaps not listen because he was still daze and couldn't understand a thing. The taller one in the trench coat was handing him something, and he accepted it without a thought.
Soon the world and his thoughts began to clear. "uhhh... what's happening, why is everyone so quiet" but then he heard the torndo alarm and jumped to his feet startling one of the girls. "I got to get home!" was the only thing he said before he sprinted out.

Before Tess could even finish saying, "You want to die, idiot!?" the boy was already out the door.
"I wouldn't worry too much about him," replied the young woman who had apparently given back the Digi-Device. "There is no tornado."
Tess blinked. "But then...the alarms...?"
"...Are a cover-up for what's really going on." The last sentence was punctuated by a distant stare. She lowered her sunglasses, and Tess could see a determined, knowing, face on the older girl.
"I...have no idea what's going on right now..." Tess remarked.
The trenchcoat lady looked down, pushing her glasses back on. "Got it," she replied. From her pocket, she pulled out a small, ordinary white envelope and let it flutter to the floor. "Find the kid who just left and pass it on. I wish I had time to stay and tell stories, but for one thing, it's too crowded here, plus I'm in a hurry myself."
"...But...Who are..."
"You can call me Serpent." And without waiting for a reply, she quickly walked out the door.
