Tess returned home from school in a huff. Several days had passed since the "tornado" alarm. Despite what that girl...Serpent...had claimed, there had been evidence reported on the news that a tornado had hit, if only briefly. But maybe that's the idea, she thought, then mentally kicked herself. Why think like that? That Serpent struck her as a paranoid person, not using her real name, not wanting to talk in front of the other people, and she figured some of that paranoia rubbed off on her.
Not having much homework that night, Tess had plenty of work to do at the zoo, but for some reason, she didn't feel like it. Curiousity was gnawing at her, and despite the growing resentment toward Serpent, she found her fascinating. What was in that little envelope?
Tess still had it; it was tucked away in a secret drawer on her desk, along with the Digi-Device. For the longest time, she had been afraid to open it, like it was a bomb. Now, her patience gone, grabbed and opened it without hesitation.
There was a single note:
Crows in numbers raiding nests, so don't leave yours behind, but still the scarred ones fighting back and hatchling you must find.
Again with the cryptic messages. Who was she, Dr. Suess? But the part about the nests and hatchlings. Did she somehow know about the egg in her Digi-Device? She pulled hers out of the drawer.
The pulse was gone. The only thing on the screen was a broken eggshell. The hatchling was loose.
